70th Anniversary Celebration
The Gamma Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Chi celebrated its 70th Anniversary during the weekend of April 18th-20th,
2008. Our chapter hosted over 600 people, which includes the over 250 alumni and their families and over
160 undergraduates and their dates. All gathered to look back over the 70 years of significance that
Gamma Upsilon has had at Mississippi State.
As for the event itself, alumni and undergraduates enjoyed several events which allowed stories to be
told and memories to be shared. The weekend kicked off with a Friday night gathering at Doe's in downtown
Starkville where Gamma Upsilon members and their dates shared conversation over cocktails and hors d' oeuvres.
On Saturday, undergraduates proudly provided tours of the chapter facilities, showing off the incredible
investments that have been made in the chapter grounds over the past decade.
Following house tours, alums, their families, and undergraduates fellowshipped over a grand luncheon at the
Palmeiro Center which included speakers and an awards presentation.
After this luncheon, the alumni and the entire undergraduate chapter held a one-of-a-kind ritual ceremony.
This event was truly special as the moment was not only shared between generations of Sigma Chis but also
between fathers, sons, grandfathers, uncles, and cousins. The luncheon and ritual ceremony was also attended
by the original Consul of Gamma Upsilon, Ray Mann. That night, Gamma Upsilon hosted a 70th Anniversary
Celebration date party at Doe’s and the State Theatre. It was a huge event that featured a Video presentation
that covered the past seventy years of the Gamma Upsilon Chapter. The 70th Anniversary Weekend was a great
opportunity for the undergraduate chapter to reach out to our alumni and celebrate the proud tradition of
Gamma Upsilon.

2008 Pledge Class Retreat - Camp Alpine
Under the leadership of Recruitment Chairmen Jeremy Bennett, Jake Black, and Rob Puckett,
Gamma Upsilon pledged the largest class among fraternities at MSU.
We are very excited about what these outstanding young men will bring to the
chapter and look forward to the leadership roles that they will take in our chapter and on campus.
During their 8 week fall pledgeship, these young men who chose Sigma Chi will
learn about the history, expectations, and values of being a brother in Sigma Chi fraternity.
They will also take part in fraternity community service projects,
intramurals, and a retreat to Camp Alpine.
They will be led by Senior Magister, Hayes Singleton from Hattiesburg.

Gamma Upsilon is blessed to have some of the most outstanding alumni in the country.
Our chapter takes pride in the relationships that we share with our Alumni;
however, we are always looking for more ways in which we can reach out to those who were in our undergraduate
shoes not too many years ago.
It has been a goal of mine to reinstall the Steel Jacket Sig Newsletter to better serve the
Gamma Upsilon Alumni as well as the parents of our undergraduates.
I think that it is imperative to keep our alumni up-to-date on Chapter
activities and events as well as celebrate the achievements of our undergraduate members.
As many of you know, the Steel Jacket Sig’s history goes back to the George Riffles,
who originally formed the Gamma Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Chi in 1938.
Finally, through the hard work and dedication of several individuals,
we have been able to reinstall the tradition of this great newsletter.
The Steel Jacket Sig will be sent out each semester in the form of an “html email”
for your viewing pleasure.
We will update you on traditional Gamma Upsilon activities, individual undergraduate achievements,
MSU campus activities, our current pledge class, chapter facilities, as well as other exciting news.
Please let us know if there are any additional updates you would like to receive.
Gamma Upsilon is proud of our rich traditional of excellence on the
MSU Campus and hope that you will enjoy the return of the Steel Jacket Sig.
In hoc,
Ross Weems, Pro Consul
Thanks to the generous support of our Alumni, the Gamma Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Chi
began the construction of our new Learning Center project in June 2008.
The Learning Center will completely replace the deteriorating original on campus chapter house.
The primary purpose of the Learning Center will be to provide an educational outlet for each and every
undergraduate member, as this is primarily why we are all in college—to receive an education and earn a
degree. The primary features of this project include an expanded library,
a new graduate assistant apartment, numerous study rooms of varying size, and a
large educational room.
The Gamma Upsilon House Corporation is very pleased about this project as it will complete a
movement begun by the late T. Bell to upgrade all Gamma Upsilon facilities at Mississippi State University.
Upon completion of the Learning Center, all Gamma Upsilon members, active and alumni, will, without a doubt,
have access to one of the finest, if not the finest, on campus fraternity complexes in the United States!
The Gamma Upsilon Learning Center will be constructed by Panola Construction Company of Batesville, MS.
The project has been designed by Pryor & Morrow, P.A.
If you would like more information about the Learning Center construction,
please go to www.msusigmachi.com to receive updates on the construction phases.
